Calculating your calories

Here at Fitness Sci-Tec, I want to help you get a better understanding of how calories work.

Working out your optimal calorie intake number can help you take control of your weight. Whether you want to build muscle, maintain or lose weight, a calorie counter gives you a better understanding of what you are putting in your body.

However, figuring out how many calories you need to eat every day can be tricky without a calorie calculator. Calorie calculation accounts for many factors, including your age, sex, height, weight, and how active you are each week. The number you get will change depending on your fitness goals, so if you want to lose weight, you will get a lower number than if you want to maintain or gain weight.

Online calorie calculators are straightforward, easy-to-use tools that give you a straightforward number that you can use as a guideline for what you eat every day.

Calorie deficit calculator to lose weight

If your goal is weight loss, by ticking that option on “Step 3: Select your goal”, the Fitness Sci-Tec calculator will automatically operate as a calorie deficit calculator. The result you get will come via email, giving you the number of calories that is recommended for your food to have each day to help you lose weight.

It is important to note that even if you are trying to lose weight, you still need to give your body enough calories and nutrition so you get the energy you need. If you decide to take on my weight loss programme here at Fitness Sci-Tec, I can create a personalised meal plan for you so you get enough food every day.

Along with the calorie calculator, I offer premium progress tracking tools that are far better and more advanced than your standard bathroom scale, thereby giving you better means of measuring your body composition and your progress. These include:

  • Estimated body composition (fat-free/fat mass, current vs. desired body fat percentage, and waist to hip ratio)
  • Full body girth measurements
  • Estimated 1RM testing
  • Estimated metabolic rate
  • And more!

As any expert will tell you, sustainable weight loss can take months. However, the road to more confidence and better health will make that time investment 100% worth it.

What are calories anyway?

A calorie is a type of energy unit that you can find in all sorts of things, including gas, coal, and all types of food. That includes sources of fat, carbohydrates, sugars, proteins, and more.

Getting a balanced amount of calories is crucial for you to go about your daily activity. Consuming too many calories means you are probably eating too much food – or too much Sign in unhealthy food. Too few calories – that is, a major calorie deficit – means your body and brain lose crucial nourishment, which can lead to consequences such as a loss of muscle mass, difficulties concentrating, and not having the day-to-day energy that you need.

Because calories are a form of energy, you can see why they have such a close relationship with your total daily energy expenditure in the calorie calculator. The amount you consume needs to balance with whatever training regime you have – because calories are what give you enough energy for your everyday activity.

Understanding your food

Not all food sources, as you may have already guessed, have the same number of calories.

High-calorie foods have a large number of calories in proportion to their serving size. While you might typically associate that term with junk food, there are also plenty of healthy high-calorie foods. For example, avocados, nuts, olive oil, and whole grains are all high in calories while also providing you with good quality nutrition.

Empty calorie food is characterised by having a lot of calories without otherwise being a good source of nutrition. Processed food like lollies, ice cream, and junk food fall under this category.

Low-calorie foods have fewer calories compared to their serving size. Fruit and vegetables all tend to be food sources that are low in calories.
